Rural ToursSEE BOTTOM OF PAGE FOR PHOTOS AND DETAILED ITINERARY OF TOURAfter much consideration, research and encouragement from customers, we are very proud to announce this new venture. We are extremely excited by these tours and believe that they can potentially have as much impact as the Dharavi Slum Tours. Purpose of tour It is also a great way to get out of Mumbai and enjoy the simple life, with fresh air in beautiful surroundings. Activities Stay night in village Your living arrangements are not meant to be 5 star, but we do believe that we cater to people requiring different levels of comfort, and most importantly where you stay is CLEAN. You can sleep on the floor or on a bed, you can take a shower by the well or in a bathroom. You can go to the toilet in the open or inside. It's up to you! Food Travel by boat and car PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO BOAT SERVICE DURING THE MONSOON- FROM 15 JUNE 2008. To get to the village we go directly by car from Mumbai, which takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. Raigad Fort Catch train to Goa If you are coming from Goa, the only suitable train arrives at 17.25. To get the most from the tour, you would need to stay two nights in the village, although just one night is possible as well. If you wish to go elsewhere in India besides Goa, then please give us your requirements and we will try to organise something. Flexible Itinerary Tour timings/dates You will return by boat, arriving at the Gateway of India at 8.30pm the following day. If you wish to do a private tour (up to five people) then please give us the dates most suitable for you, and we will do our utmost to book you in. We realise that some people travel as individuals or in very small groups and will want to go on a trip with others who they don't know. For these people we have suggested some dates (see box on right), so please get in touch if you wish to book a place. If you would rather do the tour on another date, then let us know and we will put this date up as well. But please note that we need a minimum of four people to do a tour. Price For a group of up to 5 people, the cost is Rs 12,000 plus Rs 1,000 per person- e.g. for a couple, total price would be Rs 14,000 For a shared tour, cost per person is Rs 4,000. Contribution to villages
For a private group of two people, this leaves us with a profit of Rs 4,400 approximately for the two days. Given that this is over two days, that we have invested in a bathroom in the village where you stay, as well as having taken three trips and many hours on the internet researching the tour, we think that the price set is very fair. Also the monies given to the host family and the villages are not tax deductible expenses. |
As a company we are most well known for our tours of Dharavi- the biggest slum
in Asia. Come and see the numerous small scale industries, as well as the different, vibrant communities from
all over India. Read comments from prior customers and
press reviews.
"I can thoroughly recommend the tour. It is extremely well organized and Krishna
is an excellent guide.... The itinerary includes a mix of visits which give the visitor the
feel of rural Maharashtra" - Sandra

The tour starts and ends with a 50min boat trip from the Gateway of India to Mandva, on the mainland.
On arriving by Mandva, we head by car to Indapur, and on the way you experience the stunning
Maharashtrian countryside. During the monsoon, the boat does not operate so we have to go by car to the villages,
which takes between 3.5 and 4 hours.

On the way, you will also observe lots of activity from the car. For example, you will see construction workers including
the huts which they live in, communities making bricks, and goats being herded together. The guide will also give you
some insight to the lives of these people including how much they are being paid. We may stop
at some places, such as the communities who live and work just off the roads making bricks. _____________________________________________________

At the first village, a Buddhist village, you will look around and have a “chai” in one family's house,
with the guide explaining how the village operates and talking about the lives of the family members.
Vishal, our funny, full of life “helper” for the trip is a member of this family, and he
will then be with you for the remainder of the tour.

get settled into your accommodation, meet your host family and wander around with the tour guide,
meeting some of the characters in
the beautiful village. You will also visit the nearby temple, where the guide will explain about Hinduism and its
importance and ceremonies within village life.

In the late afternoon, you head to see one of the tribal indigenous communities (Adivasis). There you will
see and understand their way of life and their beliefs. Here we have a strict NO CAMERAS POLICY.
Very close by is a place to sit, chat and watch the beautiful sunset.

| Next morning will be an early start, and you can milk the cows, plough the field, harvest the rice, wash clothes, and learn to carry water on your head. You can play in or watch the lads in the village play cricket, and/or wander around the area surrounding the village, tasting the local fruits such as tamarind. School for the children doesn't start until 11am and so is a good time to interact with them. | ||||||||||

Later on in the morning, you head off to Raigad Fort.
You can either walk up the 1,400 steps up to the top (!), with
stunning views on the way, or you can catch the cable car. Afterwards, in the late afternonn
you head back to Mandva to catch the boat,
using a different route to which you came.
For those heading onto Goa, enjoy more of the beautiful countryside! _____________________________________________________

You will be sleeping in a small house 30 metres away from your host family: there is a double bed and
there are mattresses for you to sleep on the floor. We have recently built a shower and toilet in a new block just
outside the host family's house. But you still have the option of taking a bucket shower by the well
(with Vishal gathering water and making sure that you clean yourself properly!), and you can go to the toilet
out in the open like many other villagers if you wish!
