On 28 May 2007 in collaboration with with the NGO “MESCO” we opened a Community and Education Centre in Dharavi. The idea behind the centre is to help in the development of some young people in Dharavi.

We have rented a place very close to Kumbharwada, the pottery area which we visit on the tour, and are currently running 5 English classes from Monday to Saturday

We are developing a new syllabus in collaboration with Malvern House, a language school in London which applies the EFL (English as a foreign language) methods of teaching. Malvern House are accredited by the British council, and the EFL method of teaching is worldwidely recognised as being the best way to learn English. Both parties are very excited by the possiblities of teaching in this way- a fun, stimulating method which is alien to the pupils.

These new classes started in February 2008. What makes running the classes so rewarding is the attitude of the children, who go voluntarily and are very keen to learn and improve themselves.

We currently have a volunteer, Alex, taking one of the English classes, and we are always looking for people to volunteer so if you are interested in getting involved, short or long term (3 month minimum commitment required), for a couple of hours a week (or more frequently if you wish) please contact us. There is no pressure to get involved- we will show you what we do and then you can get back to us later with your decision.
